Essential Tips Before You Go

🅿️

Aires de service: France has 1,500+ designated motorhome service areas (aires de service and aires de camping-car) — often free or €5–10/night with electricity and water. Download the Área GPS or Park4Night app to find them. Many are in extraordinary locations — town squares, lakesides, vineyard car parks.

🍷

Wine regions: Bordeaux, Burgundy, Alsace, the Loire and Champagne all have excellent motorhome areas directly in the vineyards. Many domaines invite motorhomes to park overnight in exchange for buying wine — genuinely one of France's great pleasures. Wine tourism (œnotourisme) is beautifully developed.

💡

Summer booking: July and August are France's busiest caravan months — the entire country is on holiday simultaneously. Book campsites 2–3 months in advance for coastal destinations. Inland France (Dordogne, Lot, Aveyron) is far less crowded and just as beautiful. May, June and September are the sweet spots.

⚠️

Peage (toll roads): French motorways (autoroutes) are excellent but heavily tolled. Paris to Lyon costs approximately €40 for a motorhome. Using D-roads (departmental roads) is slower but free and often more scenic. ViaMichelin app calculates toll costs and can route around them.

🥐

Bread, cheese and markets: A morning market (marché) visit in any French town is one of the great pleasures of motorhome life in France. Buy fresh baguette, local cheese, olives and charcuterie for a fraction of restaurant prices. Markets are almost universally Thursday or Saturday morning.

What to Pack in Your Rental Campervan

Most rental vehicles include basic kitchen equipment, bedding and outdoor furniture. Here is what to add yourself:

There's something specifically French about the experience of motorhome travel here. Stopping at a boulangerie at 7am in a sleeping village, warm bread in hand. Pulling up to a free aire overlooking a Burgundy vineyard, opening a local bottle as the sun sets over the vines. France has perfected the art of living well — and travelling by motorhome is the best way to access that life on your own terms, at your own pace.

May–June for lavender fields in bud, châteaux without crowds and the best weather before peak season. September–October for grape harvest, warm weather and 30% cheaper prices than August. July–August is beautiful but very crowded on the coast. April is excellent for Paris and the Loire Valley.
Can I park my motorhome in Paris?

Do I need a Crit'Air vignette for French cities?
